Welcome to Ghostwater Creek Ranch

Thousands of years ago, native Apache peoples settled into the ancient caves and rock shelters of the Lower Pecos Canyon District seeking out the abundance and variety of wild game offered in the area. While the abundance of wild game remains, those ancient peoples have long since gone, leaving behind caches of seeds, various tools, bits of clothing, cave art, burial sites and, of course, their ghosts. These are the lands of Ghostwater Creek, so named both for the legends of ghost sightings that stretch back nearly a century among the area’s residents and for the ghost-like comings and goings of powerful water flows in the low-lying areas of the region.

The Ghostwater Creek Ranch consists of over 2,000 acres of prime hunting land including “The Reserve”, a section of especially rugged terrain where some very large animals are known to live. The landscape contains vast areas wooded with oaks and other native trees and brush along with immensely large hills with terraced shelf rocks and caves that slope down onto numerous dry creek beds. These lands provide an excellent habitat for Barbado, Aoudad, Axis Deer, Javelina, Turkey, Quail, Dove and, of course, White Tail Deer, all of whom thrive on the ranch in unique abundance.

We here at Ghostwater Ranch are committed to bringing you, the guest, the very best, most comfortable and worry-free hunt possible. That’s why we take care of all the little things in addition to providing you with a fantastic hunting experience.

We handle all the arrangements for local hunting licenses for our guests, simply supply us with your information and we’ll take care of the rest. In addition, we can take care of all the arrangements for taxidermy and processing with one of our skilled off-site partners in these fields. And should one of our guests, for whatever reason, need a gun for their hunt, we’ll let you use one of ours.

Ask about our corporate hunting packages which allow your firm to receive multiple hunts throughout the season.

LOCATION

Ghostwater Creek Ranch is located in Del Rio, Texas on the northwestern edges of the Tamulipan Thornscrub, also called south Texas brush country, right on the U.S. – Mexico border. The closest major city is San Antonio which lies 164 miles to the East. The city is served by Del Rio International Airport with service to Houston offered by Continental Connections of Continental Airlines.

Texas Hill Country can be considered to possess a generally temperate climate. From November to March, it is recommended that hunters equip themselves for some potentially cold weather. During the rest of the year, light-weight clothing is preferable, especially during the summer months when temperatures can reach into the 90’s. Camouflaged clothing at the ranch is optional and blaze orange is not required.

Ghostwater Creek Ranch is operated by rancher John Brown whose top priorities are to treat his guests well and ensure your hunts on his ranch won’t soon be forgotten. Head guide Doug Powell leads an experienced and talented group of hunting guides who pride themselves in getting you on your trophy fast. All our guides possess an intimate knowledge of the terrain along with an understanding of the habits and tendencies of the animals in the area to ensure that you have the best, most successful hunt possible.

Game available for hunting at the ranch includes Barbado, Aoudad, Axis Deer, Javelina, Turkey, Quail, Dove and White Tail Deer. All of these creatures populate the ranch in unique abundance with protein supplements fed to our game through a wildlife management program, ensuring maximum growth, health and size for all of our animals.

Hunts are conducted either from a blind or on foot with traditional stalking hunts. The type of game being pursued is instrumental in determining how hunts will be lead. Other factors include our guest’s ability to walk potentially long distances and spend the better part of a day on their feet. That being said, the guest will ultimately determine how their hunt is conducted.

The ranch is equipped with skeet shooting and range facilities where you can hone your hunting skills and sight-in your rifle, ensuring that your equipment and abilities will be in tip-top shape for your hunt at Ghostwater.
