Woodland Caribou, one of the five caribou sought after by trophy hunters, is huntable only in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador, and there, only on the island of Newfoundland. This caribou subspecies once roamed in every Canadian province and in some states of the United States. Human encroachment into critical caribou habitat, over time, is the most likely major contributor to the woodlands disappearance in most areas. The island of Newfoundland , with only a half million people, still has considerable expanses of wild area, and here the woodland caribou has done well. Notwithstanding, as caribou all across the North seem to be in steady decline, so too are the woodland caribou on the island of Newfoundland. Currently there is a limited hunt, and if you are looking to place a woodland on the wall in your trophy room, the time is now to get a plan together for Fall 2010.
